What to Expect

What do I wear?

Wear what makes you feel comfortable, good about yourself and honors God and the people around you. Some folks come in blue jeans and favorite team jersey depending on the season and if there is a home game (Indians, Browns, Cavs, Monsters – Steelers’ jerseys are at your own risk☺). Others like to dress more formally in a suit and tie for men or dresses for women.

What’s the best way to get to Old Stone?

Walk/Bike: We are convenient to most downtown condos, apartments and hotels (please feel free to bring your bicycle into the church; a greeter or security officer will show you the best place to lock it up). RTA (public transit): we’re right across the Square from Terminal Tower/Tower City and on every major bus route. Car/Motorcycle: street parking is available around the church, or you can use our free professional valet service on Ontario Street or park in the Public Square West lot just south of the former John Q’s Steakhouse (be sure to bring your parking stub with you so we can validate it for you). What will it be like when I arrive?

Entering from the Square (front doors) or the Ontario Street (east side doors) you will likely be greeted by an Elder, Deacon or just about any other friendly Old Stone member. If you arrive early, the coffee is usually on in the main hall between the Gallery at Old Stone and the Sanctuary; help yourself and join a conversation. Feel free to go to one of the adult study groups held in the Chapel or in the Gallery.

Is there a Nursery? What’s it like?

Yes. Our excellent facility is friendly, welcoming and well equipped. We have a paid, licensed nursery staff, volunteers who assist the staff when necessary and wireless signalers for the parents so they are never out of reach. The Nursery is located on the main floor, past the coat room, at the far end of the long hallway.

What if I want to keep my children in worship? Is there a Quiet Room?

Children are most welcome in worship. If a fussy child is making his or her parent uncomfortable, our “stress proof” Quiet Room at the back of the Sanctuary offers a big screen television which broadcasts the service, carpeted floor and comfy chairs. We also offer children’s activity bags for older children who stay in worship. You are welcome to bring a snack for your children.

Is there Sunday School?

Yes, every Sunday at 10:15am there are programs for every age and every stage. Children under six have an additional program during worship directly after Children’s Time.

What is worship like?

Worship at Old Stone is friendly, relaxed and graciously welcoming. Our worship style is mostly traditional but always contemporary in spirit. Although we have a wonderful Holtkamp pipe organ and professional organist, sometimes music is played on acoustic guitar, piano and African drum. Old Stone is renowned for its great preaching and fantastic choral music. Rev. Dr. Mark Giuliano has been called “One of the best preachers in the Presbyterian Church (USA)” and preaches most Sundays and special holiday services (check the home page to be sure). Our 16-20 member choir is one of the best in the state and includes a dozen professional singers, all of whom hold Master’s or Doctorate degrees in voice.  Occasionally, orchestral musicians from the area will perform with the Old Stone Choir. Your spirit will be fed, your faith will find direction, and you will find a home!

What happens when worship is over?

Some people come to Old Stone for the great preaching. Some come for the excellent music. But most everyone stays for the friendly social time over coffee, tea and a wide variety of finger foods.

Can I bring a friend?

Absolutely! But we are pretty sure you are bound to make some new friends at The Old Stone Church. See you Sunday!
