What is the Session?

“The session is the council for the congregation. It shall be composed of those persons elected by the congregation to active  service as ruling elders, together with all installed pastors and associate pastors…” (G-3.0201) – The Book of Order

“Ruling elders are so named not because they “lord it over” the congregation (Matt. 20:25), but because they are chosen by the  congregation to discern and measure its fidelity to the Word of God and to strengthen and nurture its faith and life.  Ruling elders, together with teaching elders, exercise leadership, government,  spiritual discernment, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a congregation as well as the whole church, including ecumenical relationship (G-2.0301) – The Book of Order

“One of the great satisfactions of serving on the session is the opportunity to establish lasting friendships with others of like dedication and purpose. Women and men who serve as ruling elders find that this service affords them the chance to share in deep and significant ways with their peers on the session and grow in the knowledge and love of God and their associates in ministry.” (P. Wright, The Presbyterian Ruling Elder: An Essential Guide)
