“Fifty percent of the people IHN affiliates serve are children… You have only to see the face of a homeless child to realize the magnitude of the problem.” -Lee Rutti
Interfaith Hospitality Network It is very difficult to remain objective when you work with homeless mothers with children. Often times I find that the stronger my opinion, the more it comes from the heart, not the mind. I discovered that both my heart and mind were aroused by one of our IHN mothers.
Before ending up homeless, she dealt with a husband who was heavily into drugs - had many new beginnings, rehabilitation programs and counseling together, none of which helped this husband change his lifestyle. Concerned about the safety of her two children, she had the courage to leave. She is a former teacher, now doing substitute teaching and studying for her master's degree. The Interfaith Hospitality Network has helped her to keep her children in a good childcare program while she worked part time and looked for housing while continuing her education. She is now living in a house on the East side of town. With the help of IHN volunteers, we can see that she makes this transition.
